Introversion confirmed Sunday, 21 Jan 2007

Why is it the very few guys I’ve met this year that I would have liked to have asked out for a drink already have partners or seeing somebody? To be fair I didn’t come across them looking for people to go out with, but then again most of the people I know haven’t intentionally sought the person they are currently with.

So this week started off rather boring like every other, however I had the fortune of escaping to Newcastle for two days to go to a confernce. The conference was a bit crap as it was supposed to facilitate networking, which didn’t really happen, I only got to speak to a few people who I didn’t already know, one of which happened to be a rather cute boy (and hence the question to start). The enforced social event was at some interactive biology museum, which was rather crap although myself and the cute boy did master the Japanese dancing arcade games, aided by the some of the worst red wine I’ve ever drunk (although not the worst).

The second day of the conference involved doing a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test: and apparently I’m an INTJ. Which confirms the introversion, though I reckon its reducing well I’m in more situations that require me to not be introverted. Apparently it means I’m highly analytical, and open-minded and suspicious of theories based on poor research – like all psychometric tests it tells me nothing new. I actually came out as an INTP on the scorecard but the validation session convinced me that I’m INTJ, although I think I’m very borderline, and as the fembot identi-kit psychology bimbos (who’ve probably only just graduated themselves) said its only your preferred type, and I’m certainly becoming more J even if I’m still rather flexible.

Anyways enough of the rubbish pyschometrics, followed by lunch which closed the conference, and gave me the chance to swap (work) contact details with the cute boy. Then headed to the train with my two colleagues, somehow Yasmine ended up on the train before the one we planned to get. Anyways we got on the train and it was going a bit slow, but because of the wind they had put speed limits on the line. However the one who got the train text to ask if our train was terminating at York. Evenutally we were told that we would be held at York due to severe delays, a message that eventually turned into “We advise against all travel, if possible please return to your originating station”. Well that’s what I was trying to do.

So we decided to abandon the return to London and find somewhere to stay in York, and discovered that Yasmine had caught the train with cute boy and his colleagues. So while Liz went to visit her friend in York and cute boy’s colleagues went off to visit somebody else, Yasmine, me and cute boy strolled around York and found a very nice bar/gastropub: 1331 which did very good food in very good portions and gave us a free bottle of wine. Well after a night of unintentional flirting we mosied back to the hotel where Yasmine decided to go to bed and I went back to cute boys’s room to watch The Trial of Tony Blair. Nothing happened, but it certainly wouldn’t have been unwelcome, and I actually think something might have had I stayed.

Friday started with breakfast, at which I swapped mobile numbers with cute boy, and then travelling. Luckily we managed to get seats that the reserved traveller had abandoned, which was lucky as when we pulled into Doncaster the platform was packed and the train suddenly filled up. Conversation on the train went all over the place but did result in the disclosue that he was seeing somebody (but seemed like he wasn’t happy to admit it), however it did also result in the decision to have lunch sometime.

So while the conference was crap, the adventure of getting stopped in York and the fun of spending it in the company of a cute boy means that it has been a rather enjoyable week.

2007 definitely seems to be starting better than 2006 did.

I’m back in London after my week of interesting cross-country travels.

Tuesday I went off to Norwich to visit my sister and dressed up as a road accident victim for her su’s theme night, followed by a night of visiting various pubs in the Norwich area (and not making a fool of ourselves in any establishment – though we did meet a very interesting French Feminist and a Mexican poet, and then one of my sister’s flatmates decided to play knock down ginger on the way home on two or three houses requiring me to run forever).

Thursday I took the train to Nottingham (involving a strange reversing action at Ely) to visit my friend Karin and I enjoyed a wonderful dum’n'bass DJ contest (not of my chosing but apparently I wasn’t allowed to go to DanceSoc). Friday I enjoyed Nottingham’s vast retail offerings, followed by a viewing of the new James Bond film, Casino Royale – it is very, very, very good, the love scenes in the middle aren’t the best but the rest is very good; its also surprisingly long.

Today I took the train back to London, and it was a rather lovely train, this also gave me a chance to see the insides of St. Pancras station at its current state of redevelopment, in the three months since the last time I was inside they’ve moved the Midland Mainline trains to the west side and added St. Pancras International labels everywhere. I also got to see the beautiful new arch which has a glass centre section and lets in soo much light.

Oh well I’ve enjoyed pretending to be a student for the last two weeks, but after tomorrow I must return to being a working boy, although in two weeks time I change jobs, eek/yay!

This weekend was a rather lovely weekend, although I didn’t really do much – but that might be why. Recently I’ve been all over the place at the weekends what with mum moving and my brother and family moving to Canada.

Saturday I went into town and went shopping: Fopp have a new store in London on TCR where Purves & Purves used to be – its massive, absoutley massive compared to their store on Cambridge Circus; I also popped to Paperchase and borught materials to make a birthday card – although the recipent happens to be out of the country for his special day. After shopping I came back home and started to tackle the messiness of the flat, at least the washing up got done, the second phase (tidying the living room) and third phase (tidying my room) are still to be done but at least its a start.

An arty walk in East London

Sunday I decided to go for a walk with my camera. I almost went to Columbia Rd flower market but decided that I didn’t want to carry plants for ages. Instead I walked off to Brick Lane to explore the markets and walked on to Spitalfields. I stopped for lunch and had a lamb and rosemary square pie with mash from the Square Pie people in Spitalfields. I then walked on towards Aldgate East through the back roads rather than down Commerical Street. At Aldgate East I decided to walk along Whitechapel Road rather than through the backstreets and stopped in at The Whitechapel gallery, they’ve got a display by one of Germany’s leading contemporary artists (whose name I can’t remember or be bothered to find). Some of his work was quite interesting especially one of his monochromatic paintings but some of his stuff was far too ‘conceptual’ for me: I mean how is putting two pictures of scantily clad women on top of a piece of newspaper art?? By the time I reached Whitechapel I was getting hungry and thought I should go to Sainsburys and brought myself various foodstuffs. I managed to make it back to the flat before the rain started to fall from the sky and then sat myself down with a glass of wine and my book. For dinner I cooked for the first time in weeks and cooked myself some a chicken breast baked in lemon juice and spices and had it with salad and cous cous. The rest of my evening was taken up with playing with the photos I took which you can peruse by clicking the photo or clicking here.
