It’s that time of year again, switch on ‘pre-programmed enjoyment sequence X’ for however long it takes to pass through the wonderful emotional joy that is the festive season.
For some reason it’s not seemed like Christmas is at all approaching, though to spare me the obvious evil that Thursday night shopping this week or even shopping next weekend I decided yesterday to go and buy all my shopping. Although I had to go again today to get two more presents, but yesterday I did manage to buy almost all my presents within two and a half hours including wrapping materials and avoiding the majority of London crowds. I have reaffirmed my love of Fopp. And as you can see I’ve spent today wrapping them, I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed wrapping – maybe I should open a shop that sells cookies, apple tart, chocolate torte, and offers a deluxe present wrapping service.
Walking along the streets of London at this time (and no doubt many other towns of this fair land) of year the smell of roasting chestnuts whafts about, and it’s a really beautiful smell which makes me feel all wintery. But I started to think that you don’t get chestnut roasters in summer – so where do they go? Is there a chestnut roasting equipment storage area/graveyard, or do they convert into those mobile hotdog/burger people that stand outside clubs??
Talking of food I got very disturbed today when buying my paper – creme eggs are already on sale!! It’s not even Christmas, some people probably haven’t even bought all their presents yet!
Oh well off to bed where I shall dream of present wrapping, roast chestnuts and having nightmares about three months of easter commericalism.

… I’ve been going through my iPhoto library and been uploading stuff to flickr including photos I took at Tate Modern ages and ages ago (like a year and a half ago or something) including my attempt to recreate that Grand Central photo, and my photos from Tunisia when I went in 2004.

This weekend was a rather lovely weekend, although I didn’t really do much – but that might be why. Recently I’ve been all over the place at the weekends what with mum moving and my brother and family moving to Canada.
Saturday I went into town and went shopping: Fopp have a new store in London on TCR where Purves & Purves used to be – its massive, absoutley massive compared to their store on Cambridge Circus; I also popped to Paperchase and borught materials to make a birthday card – although the recipent happens to be out of the country for his special day. After shopping I came back home and started to tackle the messiness of the flat, at least the washing up got done, the second phase (tidying the living room) and third phase (tidying my room) are still to be done but at least its a start.
Sunday I decided to go for a walk with my camera. I almost went to Columbia Rd flower market but decided that I didn’t want to carry plants for ages. Instead I walked off to Brick Lane to explore the markets and walked on to Spitalfields. I stopped for lunch and had a lamb and rosemary square pie with mash from the Square Pie people in Spitalfields. I then walked on towards Aldgate East through the back roads rather than down Commerical Street. At Aldgate East I decided to walk along Whitechapel Road rather than through the backstreets and stopped in at The Whitechapel gallery, they’ve got a display by one of Germany’s leading contemporary artists (whose name I can’t remember or be bothered to find). Some of his work was quite interesting especially one of his monochromatic paintings but some of his stuff was far too ‘conceptual’ for me: I mean how is putting two pictures of scantily clad women on top of a piece of newspaper art?? By the time I reached Whitechapel I was getting hungry and thought I should go to Sainsburys and brought myself various foodstuffs. I managed to make it back to the flat before the rain started to fall from the sky and then sat myself down with a glass of wine and my book. For dinner I cooked for the first time in weeks and cooked myself some a chicken breast baked in lemon juice and spices and had it with salad and cous cous. The rest of my evening was taken up with playing with the photos I took which you can peruse by clicking the photo or clicking here.
